What are the High Speed CNC Machining Centers?

High-speed CNC machining centers are precision manufacturing equipment characterized by high spindle speeds and high feed rates. And they are precisely controlled by CNC systems. They can complete various operations such as milling, drilling and tapping in a single clamping process. These machines are widely used in manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and medical industries.

The Key Components of High Speed CNC Machining Centers

Spindle System

The spindle of a high-speed CNC machining center is mainly divided into two types: electric spindles and mechanical spindles. Both can meet the requirements of high-speed machining.

  • The high-speed electric spindle integrates the traditional spindle and motor into one and directly integrates the stator and rotor of the spindle motor inside the spindle to achieve zero transmission drive. This design can effectively eliminate the intermediate transmission links of belts and gears, reducing transmission errors and energy loss.

To support rotational speeds of tens of thousands of revolutions per minute or even higher, high-precision ceramic bearings are typically used inside the electric spindle. These bearings can maintain stable rigidity at high temperatures. During the processing, the combined use of oil mist lubrication and water-cooling and air-cooling circulation systems can reduce bearing wear and precisely control the temperature, ensuring the long-term stable operation of the spindle.

  • Although the mechanical spindle is designed as a separate type of motor and spindle, it adopts a direct transmission method where the motor and the spindle are connected together. It can also achieve a high-speed rotation of 12,000 r / min. The internal components are all equipped with high-speed dedicated bearings, and they require an oil cooling unit for forced cooling. This is to control the temperature rise of the spindle to meet the processing requirements of medium and high-speed cutting scenarios.

Feed System

The relative motion between the tool and the workpiece is handled by the feed system. The currently most commonly used high-speed feed systems include high-speed ball screw pairs and linear motors.

  • The high-speed ball screw pair eliminates the clearance through the pre-tightening design, and is combined with precise grinding technology. It has high positioning accuracy and can withstand large axial loads.
  • Linear motors have no mechanical contact. They are directly driven by the electromagnetic force between the stator and the rotor, enabling extremely high movement speed, acceleration and positioning accuracy.

No matter which solution is adopted, the feed system is equipped with a high-dynamic servo motor, which can promptly receive instructions from the numerical control system and adjust the movement state. The fully closed-loop optical encoder configured within the system can compare the commanded position with the actual position immediately. Through dynamic error compensation by the servo driver, it ensures the repeatability of positioning accuracy.

CNC System

The CNC control system can interpret the numerous tiny line segments generated by CAD/CAM software efficiently and drive the movement of each axis through multi-axis linkage algorithms together. And easily complete the machining of complex surfaces. Meanwhile, the high-speed numerical control system can pre-read the subsequent programs and automatically determine the feed rate based on the analysis of the path curvature, which makes the tool movement more smooth.

Tool System

The tool magazine is mainly used to store tools. The tool magazine is mainly used to store tools. The disc-type tool magazine can hold 16 to 40 tools, while the chain-type tool magazine can hold 40 to 120 tools. To cope with high cutting temperatures and wear, the tool materials have generally been upgraded to ultra-fine particle hard alloys, metal ceramics and other high-performance materials. And they are supplemented with high temperature resistant hard coatings.

To avoid the severe vibrations during high speed rotation, the cutting tool and the tool holder need to be dynamically balanced as a whole. Long-handled cutting tools usually require the use of high-strength alloy materials and an improved structural design to enhance their bending strength and toughness. This can prevent deformation or fracture caused by high-speed centrifugal force.

How does a High Speed CNC Machining Centers Work?

First, you need to use CAD to draw a 3D model of the part and determine the size, material properties, and processing requirements of the part. Next, you need to use the CAM software for process planning. Select the appropriate cutting method and automatically generate the tool path based on the material. At the same time, set the processing parameters including spindle speed, feed rate, and cutting depth. Finally, the CAM software converts this information into G-code that can be recognized by the numerical control system.

Then, you can fix the materials to be processed onto the workbench fixture. According to the process requirements, install the corresponding cutting tools. Use the measuring instrument to measure and calibrate the coordinate system of the workpiece, and then transfer the coordinate data and G codes to the numerical control system.

The CNC system reads the G-code and coordinates every motion unit. The main shaft system rotates at the preset speed, the feed system drives each axis to move along the predetermined trajectory, and the tool magazine automatically changes the tool according to the program requirements. In the entire cutting process, the cooling system operates synchronously to control the processing temperature.

Real time monitoring can ensure the safety and quality of the processing. The CNC system collects real-time key data such as spindle load, axis positions, and system temperature through built-in sensors. These data will be compared with set values. Once an anomaly is  detected, the protection mechanism will be triggered immediately to ensure the safety and stability of the processing procedure.

After the processing is completed, you can remove the workpiece for size inspection. Some high-end models can also automatically measure the dimensions of the workpiece through the built-in probe. Once it is confirmed to meet the requirements, the entire manufacturing process is completed.

Types of High Speed CNC Machining Centers

Divided according to the number of processing axes

Three-axis high-speed CNC machining center

The 3-axis high-speed CNC machining center is the most basic and widely used type. It has three linear motion axes (X, Y, and Z), with the main axis direction fixed. It is highly suitable for processing single planes or simple three-dimensional structure parts.

Since it can only perform three-dimensional linear movements, if you want to process multiple surfaces of the part, multiple clamping and positioning operations are often required. Although the accuracy meets the basic requirements, the efficiency will be limited.

Four-axis high-speed CNC machining center

The 4-axis high-speed CNC machining center adds a rotary axis to the 3-axis machine. This rotation axis can drive the workpiece to rotate around its own axis, enabling continuous processing from multiple angles.

For example, when drilling circular holes on cylindrical parts or milling the tooth grooves of gears, there is no need to disassemble and reassemble multiple times like in 3-axis machines. Instead, the multi-face processing can be completed simply by adjusting the angle of the rotating axis. This not only reduces the clamping error but also increases the processing efficiency by over 40%. It is particularly suitable for small and medium-sized parts with circular features.

Five-axis high-speed CNC machining center

The five-axis high-speed CNC machining center has two rotating axes which enables the tool to approach the workpiece from any direction. It can complete the high-precision processing of complex irregular structures, spatial surfaces and deep cavity side walls in a single operation. It is the core equipment for handling complex parts in the high-end field.

Based on the Structural Form of the Machine Tool

Vertical Type

The spindle of the vertical high-speed CNC machining center is vertically downward, and the worktable is placed horizontally. The compact overall structure makes it convenient for clamping and disassembling the workpiece. The operator can directly observe the processing process, and the cost is also relatively low. It is mainly suitable for processing small and medium-sized parts, such as the covers of 3C products and the housings of small automotive sensors.

Horizontal Type

The spindle of the horizontal high-speed CNC machining center is arranged horizontally. The worktable can rotate around the Z-axis multiple times, and it is often equipped with a large capacity chain type tool magazine.

Its notable advantage lies in the smooth chip removal. The chips can naturally fall into the chip removal system due to gravity, avoiding the accumulation that may affect the processing accuracy. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for batch processing of box-shaped parts and multi-face components.

Although the horizontal type equipment has a larger floor area, its multi-faceted continuous processing capability can  enhance production efficiency significantly.

Gantry Type

The gantry-type machining center adopts a gantry frame structure. The crossbeam is suspended above the two side bed plates, featuring extremely high rigidity and stability. It is specifically used for processing extremely large and heavy workpieces and is commonly found in the manufacturing of automotive molds, large equipment frameworks, and other fields.

What are the Main Challenges in High Speed Machining Centers?

The core challenge of high-speed CNC machining lies in how to maintain the high precision and surface finish of the workpiece under the conditions of high spindle speed and high feed rate. Problems such as vibration during high-speed operation, cutting heat and tool wear will directly affect the processing quality.

However, you can adopt an electric spindle with excellent dynamic performance and a highly rigid machine structure, and equip it with an effective cooling system. By using a high performance numerical control system, you can ensure the motion trajectory is smooth and accurate.

What are the Directions for the Technological Development of High Speed CNC Machining Centers in the Future?

The technological development of high-speed CNC machining centers in the future mainly focuses on two aspects: tools and intelligence.

In terms of cutting tools, new materials such as diamond-coated, nano-film and ultra-hard base tools will be widely adopted. These tools possess excellent wear resistance, heat resistance and service life.

In the field of intelligence, we will deeply integrate artificial intelligence in machines. By analyzing and processing data in real time, we aim to optimize cutting parameters, predict tool lifespan, and identify equipment abnormalities.

How to Troubleshoot when Accuracy Suddenly Drops during Machining?

When the precision of the processing suddenly drops, you can check the following key aspects systematically.

Firstly, you should check the tool condition immediately for excessive wear or damage. Check whether the handle of the tool is loose or contaminated with debris, and whether the clamping force is insufficient. Then, confirm if the workpiece fixture has loosened or shows positioning deviations.

If there are no issues in all the above steps, then you need to consider the internal structure of the machine tool, such as the guide rails, the lead screw, and the spindle.

By following this step-by-step process of conducting the checks from the outside to the inside and from the easier to the more difficult, it can help you quickly identify and solve most of the precision anomaly issues.
